Can You Get Your Dental Bonding Whitened?

Many patients call Stone Canyon Dental wanting to know if they can have their dental bonding whitened. This is an understandable question because bonding material can become stained just like natural enamel. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the bonding material and natural tooth will not stain at the same rate.

More complicated than natural teeth

This can be problematic and make it appear that someone has food stuck to their teeth, even when it is only the bonding material. To solve this problem, many patients want to simply whiten it and bring their teeth back to a glorious and bright shade.

The problem is, dental bonding material does not respond to a whitening solution like natural teeth do. This makes it necessary to whiten teeth and replace the bonding material at the same time. Otherwise, the bonding material will continue to appear stained while the teeth will look white, creating an even further contrast between the two.

Can you get your dental bonding whitened?

Even though bonding material does not respond to whitening material as teeth do, there is a convenient solution. Simply replace the bonding material at the same time or within a week or two of whitening teeth to ensure that the composite matches the shade of the teeth. It is easy to place composite on the teeth. This procedure is non-invasive, takes a single office visit and will not cause very much discomfort.

As such, there is really no need to live with teeth and bonding material that do not blend perfectly. Just let our office know that this is something of interest so that we can schedule the appointment appropriately. We like to plan ahead to make sure that if there is any time delay between the whitening procedure and the re-laying the composite, it is minimal at best.

Is this a good fit for me?

For patients wondering if this is a good fit or if they should simply keep their teeth stained, it is important to consider how much value a person gets out of a beautiful smile. For one, a beautiful smile can improve a person's confidence and how they approach life. This can have far-reaching positive benefits. Secondly, a white and beautiful smile looks healthier. This creates an image of a person taking care of themselves and placing an importance and value on how they appear, along with their health.

For these reasons, whitening teeth can be highly beneficial and worthwhile, even if it means needing to replace dental bonding material. Keep in mind that composite resin is not designed to last forever anyway. It is necessary to replace it from time to time to ensure that it remains strong. With that in mind, replacing bonding material can not only be good for the appearance of the smile but also the health of it.
