Invisalign is a great option for someone looking to straighten their teeth in a discreet and seamless manner. It is one of many clear aligner brands that dentists offer adult or adolescent patients. Although Invisalign has been around for a couple of decades, it is still much newer than traditional braces. With that, comes questions of which treatment is better and more effective.
Want to learn more about Invisalign? This article outlines how these clear aligners differ from other treatment options like braces. Being aware of how Invisalign works in comparison to other options can be helpful when trying to determine which is best.
Invisalign compared to other treatments
Invisalign is a lot different than any other type of teeth straightening option. Find out how below.
Invisalign
Invisalign is one of the most popular brands of clear aligners. Instead of using brackets and wires, Invisalign relies on a simple aligner, for either the top arch or bottom arch of teeth. These aligners are to be worn at least 23 hours a day to ensure that they do their job. Outside of oral hygiene and eating, Invisalign should not be left out of the mouth.
Patients will visit their general dentist every 2-3 weeks to undergo adjustments. Adjustments for Invisalign are rather simple. The dentist will examine the teeth and ensure that they are making progress. The old Invisalign aligner will be thrown out and replaced with the next aligner in the full set.
Braces
Braces are a lot different than Invisalign, in the sense of appearance and the way the treatment works. Braces use metal wires and brackets. The brackets are cemented onto the surface of each tooth and the wires run through each bracket connecting them.
Typically, braces treatment lasts for up to a year and longer in some cases. Throughout the treatment process, the patient will visit their general dentist every 2-3 weeks to undergo adjustments. These adjustments are different than Invisalign. Instead of a new set of braces, the wires are simply tightened. Additionally, some patients may require rubber bands to apply additional force to certain teeth.
Does Invisalign work better?
There are no proven facts that Invisalign works better or worse than other treatment options. However, what is known is that Invisalign is more comfortable than braces and it is a lot more discreet. It is hard to compare the two and determine which is better because they both work differently. Invisalign moves the teeth altogether, while braces shift each tooth individually based on the brackets.
