Give Your Teeth an Upgrade With Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are one of the most used restorations in dentistry. They cover the visible part of a tooth, protecting it against bite forces, acids, and oral bacteria. Crowns are designed to look just like natural teeth, so they also improve the appearance of damaged or discolored teeth.
Upgrading your teeth with dental crowns
It typically takes two visits to a dentist to get a crown placed on a tooth. The first visit involves preparing the person’s tooth for restoration by removing some of the enamel (the outer protective covering of teeth) from its sides. This creates a better fit for the crown, which typically leads to a longer-lasting restoration.
An impression of the patient’s tooth is also taken during the first visit and sent to technicians who make restorations in a dental lab. The process takes about two weeks for the customized restoration to get back to the dentist. A temporary crown is placed on the patient’s tooth once an impression has been taken. The temporary crown comes off during the second appointment, and the customized crown is cemented into place.
Some of the issues a dentist can address with dental crowns include:
- Discolored teeth: Teeth whitening treatments are the standard way to address stains and discoloration, but they are not effective on specific types of stains like those caused by tooth decay, fluorosis, or taking tetracycline antibiotics. Such stains can be covered up with a crown, restoring the aesthetics of the patient’s teeth
- Decayed/damaged teeth: Dental crowns can be used to fix badly damaged or decayed teeth. The crown creates a seal that prevents acids made by oral bacteria from getting to the tooth, causing further damage. The crown also holds the tooth together, preventing it from breaking apart further. It protects the tooth from bite forces, and it restores its appearance
- Deformed teeth: Crowns can be used to fix aesthetic deformities that take away from a patient’s smile, like short or unnaturally shaped teeth. Crowns are designed to look like real teeth, and they hide any deformities on teeth they are placed on
- Spaces between teeth: Crowns can also be used to close up abnormal spaces between a person’s teeth. Dentists do this by placing oversized crowns on the two teeth closest to the gap, closing it up
- Infected teeth: Dental crowns are often used to cover up infected teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy. A root canal involves extracting a tooth’s nerve and blood vessels, inserting medication into it, and sealing it with a material called gutta-percha. Dentists typically recommend covering treated teeth with a crown to prevent further damage and reduce the risk of re-infection
