What Should a Patient Bring With Them When Seeing an Emergency Dentist?

An emergency dentist is the best dental professional to see when a patient experiences an injury. However, during dental emergencies, most people are not thinking about how to prepare. Thankfully, we are here to help!

Heading to see an emergency dentist? This information may be quite helpful to you. We outline a few important tips, including what to bring with you.

What a patient should bring when seeing an emergency dentist

The following things may be quite helpful when visiting an emergency dentist. It is best to know this information so if an emergency does occur, the patient is prepared.

Any tooth fragments

An emergency dentist handles injuries such as dislodged teeth, dislocated jaws or even fractures in the teeth. More often than not, these injuries leave tooth fragments behind. These fragments should be brought to the visit with the emergency dentist. There may be a solution so the tooth can be repaired.

Dental history

Most patients are familiar with their own medical history, including dental records. When going to an emergency dentist for an injury, it is best to have those records on hand. Dental emergencies can cause issues with prior oral health conditions, which is why it is good to have records.

If the patient is not able to bring physical copies of their dental history, then it may be best to have the general dentist send records over to the emergency dentist so they can make sure that they do not miss anything while administering treatment.

Any oral appliances

Many patients use oral appliances such as retainers or mouth guards. These are typically custom-created for each patient. If the patient can, they should bring their appliances with them when visiting an emergency dentist. Doing so will allow the dentist to ensure that it still fits once the treatment is complete.

Other ways to prepare

It is important to stay calm when heading to an emergency dentist. There is typically a great deal of pain with urgent injuries, which may not be remedied until the dentist can diagnose the patient. If there is bleeding or swelling, ice packs and gauze should be used to halt the bleeding and bring down the swelling.

Depending on the severity of the injury, it may be best to have a family member or friend take the patient to the urgent care or hospital to visit the emergency dentist. Doing so will allow the patient to focus on their injury, without having to worry about their transportation.
