Is It Normal to Experience Pain After a Root Canal?

A common question that dentists receive is whether or not a root canal is painful. The fact is, it is never a pleasant experience to need a root canal, but the process can be made easier by better understanding what to expect before, during and after the root canal, particularly as it relates to the symptoms you may experience.

What to expect after a root canal

The symptoms vary when it comes to root canal procedures, but there are certain expectations patients can have as they prepare for the recovery process. The following is a review of the normal and abnormal symptoms after a root canal, including information about when to visit the dentist for more concerning symptoms.

Normal symptoms after a root canal

Minor discomfort is normal for a few days following a root canal, although it most often does not have a major impact on the patient’s ability to function. In fact, many are able to return to work or school soon after the root canal. Symptoms that are more common and not a cause for concern after a root canal include mild pain, tooth sensitivity and jaw soreness. The tooth may also feel awkward for a week or more following the root canal as you adjust, but this feeling will go away with time.

Abnormal symptoms after a root canal

Minor discomfort is normal after a root canal, but symptoms that are more severe are not. If the pain becomes intolerable, then it is a sign there may be issues with the tooth. Other alarming symptoms following a root canal can include:

  • Severe swelling
  • Bite complications
  • Filling or crown comes out
  • Symptoms of infection return
  • An allergic reaction

If severe swelling of the gums or other parts of the mouth develops, then it could be a sign of an issue that requires dental care. A more common concern after a root canal that needs treatment is a lost temporary crown or filling. Although minor, this can lead to an increased risk of other issues. You should also seek treatment if symptoms that existed before the root canal return or if there is an allergic reaction to post-treatment medication.

The importance of follow-up visits

The dentist may require follow-up visits so that they can place the permanent crown and check to ensure that there are no concerns with the root canal. The follow-up visits are important as not all issues with a root canal are noticeable initially, and the dentist can check to see if there are any concerning symptoms. With that said, if symptoms seem as if they are not normal, then they most likely are not. In this case, be sure to contact your dentist for follow-up care if any abnormal symptoms develop.
